On 6 January 2025 police responded to the 8700 block of 96th place in reference to a Deceptive Practices. The complainant explained that they received a text message from what they believed to be an Apple representative. The caller told the complainant that there was some suspicious activity on their account. To clear up the activity, the complainant would have to send, via Athena Bitcoin, $4000.00. After the complainant sent the monies the caller asked for $14,000.00 more. At this point the complainant knew it was a scam. The incident is under investigation.
On 12 January 2025 police responded to the police station in reference to a Theft complaint. The complainant explained that they met a female subject online and picked her up in the 7200 block of Southwest Highway. After their night ended, he drove to a gas station located in the 7700 block of Southwest Highway. There, the complainant fell asleep in their car. When the complainant awoke, the female subject was gone and so were the complainant’s wallet, cash, link card, bank card, keys, and cell phone. The incident is under investigation.
On 13 January 2025 police were dispatched to the 8500 block of 101st Terrace in reference to a Motor Vehicle Theft. The complainant explained that they parked their 2018 Alfa Romeo Q4 in the handicap spot in the community parking lot on the 11th of January. On the 13th of January the complainant noticed their vehicle was missing. The complainant posted their vehicle on a Facebook page called “Chicago Stolen Vehicle.” A short time later the complainant received notification that their vehicle was in the city of Chicago. The complainant sent someone to pick up their vehicle. The vehicle was returned to the complainant.
To keep yourself safe from a vishing attack, the most important thing to remember is you should never provide or confirm personal information over the phone. Remember that credit card companies, banks, and government officials will never call asking for sensitive information.
Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage. Always take your key fob and garage door opener with you. Please dial 911 immediately if you observe any suspicious people or activity.
